“A doctor saves lives and a Physiotherapist helps to live it again.” In 1996, 8th September was designated as World Physiotherapy Day, as in 1951, this is the date World Physiotherapy was founded.
This day marks the unity and solidarity of the global physiotherapy community. It is also an opportunity to recognize the work that physiotherapists do for their patients and community.
On the occasion of World Physiotherapy Day, Dr. Pranoti Kangutkar (PT), founder of Dr. Pranoti’s Physio Lounge, Mumbai and President of Women’s Wing, Maharashtra, for Global Association for Physiotherapy, wish to shed some light on the “Importance of Physiotherapy for Osteoarthritis”
“Osteoarthritis is the most common degenerative joint disease found today, the changes ends up been the major reason for pain and disability in adults and nowadays also in young population OA is common. This degenerative disease affects 25% of the population and is the major reason of morbidity and functional limitation in adults. Symptoms like pain, swelling, joint stiffness, joint instability etc are seen. Osteoarthritis mainly affects the knee joint as it is a weight-bearing joint. It is more seen in women compared to men. Obesity and aging been the common reason while genetic factor, repeated stress at the same joint, bone deformities add to the issue”.
