Catch-22, a Novel By American Author Joseph Heller

Catch-22: The novel was initially published in 1961 after he began writing it in 1953. It utilizes a peculiar non-chronological third-person omniscient narrative, presenting events from the points of view of several people, and is frequently considered one of the most influential books of the twentieth century. Because the narratives aren’t in chronological order, the timeline moves along with the plot.

Catch-22: The story takes place between 1942 and 1944, during World War II. Captain John Yossarian, a US Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier, is the primary character in the film.

The majority of the events in the book take place on the fictional 256th US Army Air Squadron’s home island of Pianosa in the Mediterranean Sea west of Italy. However, it also includes basic training at Lowry Field in Colorado and Air Corps training at Santa Ana Army Air Base in California. The story explores the absurdity of war and military life via the experiences of Yossarian and his comrades. They try to save their sanity while performing their duty obligations to return home.

Mike Nichols directed a film adaptation of the book, which was released in 1970. Heller released Closing Time, a sequel to the 1961 novel, in 1994.

The novel’s progression may be broken down into sections. The first follows a tale divided across people yet set in the same period in 1944. The second section jumps back to the “Great Big Siege of Bologna” before returning to the chronological present of 1944 in the third section. The fourth section flashes back to Milo’s syndicate’s beginnings and expansion, while the fifth portion returns to the present and maintains the tone of the previous four.
The fundamental facts of Snowden’s horrific demise are eventually disclosed in Chapter 41. Despite this, the story concludes on a positive note, with Yossarian learning of Orr’s fortunate escape to Sweden and his promise to join him there.
