From a botanical standpoint, the fruits may be just the fleshy development that emerges from a flower’s ovary and may or may not comprise any additional components. However, from the standpoint of the consumer or food processor, it is commonly defined because the good product of a plant or tree that contains the seed and its envelope. It is typically described as juicy, sweet, and pulpy. They are a high-moisture, usually acidic meal that is relatively easy to process and adds variety to the diet in flavor, fragrance, color, and texture.

Citrus with high vitamin C content, such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, are well recognized. Most berries and melons are also good sources. Carotene, a substance found in many, is readily converted to vitamin A in the body; cantaloupes, peaches, and apricots are high in this nutrient.
