Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Butch Cassidy Western of all time in its 10 Top 10 ranking.

Butch Cassidy: It is a 1969 American Western film written by William Goldman and George Roy Hill.

The film Butch Cassidy chronicles the story of Butch Cassidy and his sidekick Harry Longabaugh, the “Sundance Kid,” two Wild West outlaws on the run from a strong US posse following a string of train robberies. Sundance and Etta Place, Sundance’s lover, move to Bolivia in search of a more lucrative criminal career.

Butch Cassidy The Library of Congress added the film to the United States National Film Registry in 2003, citing it as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically important.”  On its “AFI’s 100 Years…100 Movies” list, the American Film Institute placed Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid as the 73rd best American film. On “AFI’s 100 Years…100 Heroes & Villains,” Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were recognized as the 20th best heroes. In 2008, the American Film Institute named Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid the 7th-greatest Western of all time in its 10 Top 10 ranking.

Only one studio wanted to acquire the script when Goldman first penned it and submitted it out for consideration. However, according to Goldman, the two main protagonists did not flee to South America. When Goldman protested that this was indeed the case, the studio chief replied, “I couldn’t care less. All I know is that John Wayne does not flee.”

Sundance was offered to Jack Lemmon, whose production company, JML, had previously produced Newman’s feature Cool Hand Luke (1967). On the other hand, Lemmon declined the part because he disliked riding horses and felt he had already portrayed the Sundance Kid in too many roles.

Steve McQueen and Warren Beatty were also considered for the position of Sundance, but both declined, with Beatty feeling that the film was too similar to Bonnie and Clyde. According to Goldman, McQueen and Newman read the scripts simultaneously and decided to make the movie. Due to differences with Newman, McQueen eventually dropped out of the project. The two actors would play each other.

The movie had its worldwide premiere at the Roger Sherman Theater in New Haven, Connecticut, on September 23, 1969. Paul Newman, his wife Joanne Woodward, Robert Redford, George Roy Hill, William Goldman, and John Foreman were among those who attended the premiere. The Penthouse and Sutton theatres in New York City opened the next day.
