This is scarcely unexpected, for myths gain power not by proving themselves but by presenting themselves. In this sense, a myth’s authority “goes without saying,” and the story can be detailed just at its power is no great unquestioned but has been rejected or overturned in some way by another, more extensive narrative.
The term myth originates from the Greek mythos, which means “word,” “statement,” “tale,” and “fiction”; the unquestionable validity of mythos can be contrasted with logos, the word whose validity or truth can be contested and shown.
