Pakistan said on Thursday that it would hold an Afghanistan peace conference over the weekend to help efforts to bring calm to the war-torn neighboring nation. “I can confirm that Pakistan will host the Afghan Peace Conference on the 17th and 19th of July,” stated Foreign Office spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhry. He noted that the meeting, which several Afghan officials will attend, will add impetus to Afghanistan’s continuing peace efforts.
Earlier, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry stated that Prime Minister Imran Khan spoke over the phone with Afghanistan’s former President Hamid Karzai and invited him to the meeting. “The most senior Afghan politicians, including Hamid Karzai, have been invited to the scheduled summit. As a result of this significant breakthrough, he believes that fresh hopes for a solution to Afghanistan’s issues would be awakened. According to the News International publication, numerous Afghan politicians have pledged to attend the meeting.
Pakistan should be accused of assisting the Taliban in their struggle for domination in Afghanistan, and the forthcoming meeting appears to be an attempt to dispel that perception. Taliban insurgents have taken control of dozens of districts in recent weeks. They are now estimated to control about one-third of the nation, only weeks before the exit of US and Western forces from Afghanistan on September 11. In an agreement with the Taliban, the US and its NATO partners agreed to remove all troops in exchange for the insurgents’ promise to prohibit extremist organizations from functioning in regions under their control.
Meanwhile, the FO spokesperson expressed worry over the developing situation in Afghanistan. “As the departure of foreign soldiers from Afghanistan nears completion, we remain worried about the country’s developing security situation. We underscore the need to reach a political settlement in Afghanistan, he added.
According to the spokesman, Pakistan has played an essential role in the Afghan Peace Process and remains dedicated to facilitating the process in the future. However, it is ultimately up to the Afghan people to select their fate.
