TMC MPs write to Prime Minister Modi, requesting that Solicitor General Tushar Mehta be removed.

TMC contradiction with the statutory responsibilities of the SG of India," the letter read.

On Friday, TMC Trinamool Congress MPs wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi,

requesting that Tushar Mehta be removed as India’s Solicitor General (SG). This follows a reported meeting between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari and Mehta in the state Center.

The report, TMC signed by person MPs Derek O’Brien, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, and Mahua Moitra, notes that Adhikari is a defendant in the 2016 Narada sting operation case, while Mehta represents the (CBI) in the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court.

“Such a meeting between an accused in serious offenses and the SG, who is advising such authorities by which the said accused is being probed, is in direct contradiction with the statutory responsibilities of the SG of India,” the letter read.

It was also stated that the conference was organized to influence the result of the cases in which Adhikari is a defendant by utilizing the SG’s high positions. “To avoid any question in the minds of the general public as to the integrity and neutrality of the office of the Secretary-General, we ask you to begin appropriate procedures for the replacement of Tushar Mehta from the post of Secretary-General of India,” the TMC MPs said in their letter to PM Modi.

Even though Adhikari could not be reached, the BJP stated that Adhikari, as the Director of the Conflict in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, may appear with the SG to address legal issues.

“The TMC is attempting to create a problem out of nothing to deflect attention away from other pressing concerns such as post-election violence, worsening of law and order in the state, and the vaccine scam.” Is there a constitutional prohibition on an elected public representative meeting with the SG if he is an accused in a case? The plight is now being caught in court. Adhikari is the West Bengal Legislative Assembly’s Leader of the Opposition.
