Congress: Before he met with Sonia, pro-Amarinder leaders sent out a tweet criticizing Sidhu’s proposed promotion.

Congress Sidhu has been summoned to Delhi by party president Sonia Gandhi for a meeting, which is unknown.

Congress: Even before the Congress high leadership could publicly declare its “peace formula” for the crisis-plagued Punjab unit, rumors of Navjot Singh Sidhu’s elevation as state party head appear to have exacerbated the infighting.

According to sources, Congress Sidhu has been summoned to Delhi by party president Sonia Gandhi for a meeting, which is unknown. Harish Rawat, the party’s Punjab in-charge, is also likely to attend.  On Thursday, major political drama erupted in Chandigarh as Rawat allegedly announced that Sidhu would take over as the party’s state unit leader.

Rawat’s earlier comments sparked a flurry of political activity in Punjab’s capital, with the camps of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and Sidhu meeting in huddles to plan their next moves. Many top party leaders in the state appear to be unhappy with reports of Sidhu’s promotion. One of them, Manish Tewari, a former union minister who is close to the chief minister, wrote to Twitter on Friday to support a non-Sikh state unit president.

Another senior party leader and general secretary of the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), Pawan Dewan, expressed his displeasure with the proposed move on the social networking site. Over the last two months, the Congress has been facing a significant crisis in Punjab, with former cabinet minister Sidhu leading a mutiny against the chief minister.

Even though certain state ministers appear to be ‘inclined’ towards him, the Captain camp says that most MLAs support him, which is why the CM is opposing Sidhu’s nomination to PCC chairman.

The brawl has jeopardized the party’s campaign for re-election in the state next year.
