The lowersex ratio ( 933) further highlights the apathy of the prevailing patriarchal system towards female births. That’s why Indian Government had to launch “ Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” to encourage female child births and so girl child and females are showing their prowess in all walks of life including Defence, Education, Research ,Sports and beyond.

When it comes to sports, the first name that comes up in the mind is “Payyoli Express” ie P.T Usha, who hailed from deep South part of the country in Kerala. An entire generation grew up seeing her as role model in sports and prayed for her
success in 1984 Olympics, Mann Ki Baat when she missed first much sought medal by 1/100 seconds. That was when people realized the importance of micro seconds in sports for the first time. Even prior to track and field events, great Indian swimmers -Bula Chaudhary and Arti Saha were a known figures in the country. But, it was Anju Bobby George, who got bronze medal in Long Jump in world Athletics held in Paris to prove her mettle.

But, our country of the size of Billion plus population, never became visible on medal tally in Olympics when Karnam Malleswari brought laurels to the country by winning Bronze medal in weight lifting in Sydney Olympics in 2000. Mann Ki Baat The spurt in Olympics medal were possible due to new initiatives by the Government of India and young talented sports women in the country like Mary Kom(2012-boxing), Sakshi Malik(2016), Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu in Badminton emerged star performers in the international arena. The six time grand slam winner Sania Mirza became ranked one Tennis player in the country and made country proud. Even Indian women went beyond tracks to prove their endurance like Bachendri Pal, first Indian woman to climb Mt Everest and so Santosh Yadav too in early 80s.

Indian women cricket team led by Harmanpreet carved a place in the hearts of million of Indians today. A new generation of young women like Dipa Karmakar, Hema Das, Dute Chand held the hopes of every Indian high. The days are not far when, despite of pandemic COVID- 19, Indian women will unfurl India’s Tri-colour forthcoming Japan Olympics. On the day of International Women, we salute all Indian women for their accomplishments, sagacity and countrypride.
